Malayi Matar Paneer

Malayi Matar Paneer

Ingredients for Malayi Matar Paneer

  • Green peas: 40 g
  • Cashews: 5 pieces
  • Poppy seeds (khus khus): 0.5 tsp
  • Onion: 1 small, finely chopped
  • Coriander powder: 1 tsp
  • Chilli powder: 0.5 tsp — adjust to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves: 1 tbsp, chopped
  • Oil: 1 tbsp
  • Salt: as per requirement
  • Paneer: 100 g, cut into cubes
  • Curd (yogurt): 3 tbsp

Instructions for Malayi Matar Paneer

  1. Prepare the creamy paste: Soak the cashews and poppy seeds in warm water for 10–15 minutes to soften. Drain and blend them with the curd to a smooth paste. If needed add 1–2 tbsp water to reach a silky consistency. Keep aside.
  2. Saute the onions: Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until soft and light golden (6–8 minutes).
  3. Add dry spices: Lower the heat slightly and add coriander powder and chilli powder. Stir for 30 seconds until the spices become aromatic (be careful not to burn).
  4. Cook peas: Add the green peas to the pan and sauté for 2–3 minutes. If using frozen peas, cook until they are heated through.
  5. Combine paneer: Gently add the paneer cubes and lightly toss so they are coated with the spiced onion mix. Cook 1–2 minutes.
  6. Add the creamy cashew–poppy–curd paste: Reduce heat to low and stir the prepared paste into the pan. Mix gently so the paste coats the peas and paneer. If the gravy is too thick, add 2–3 tbsp warm water to reach desired consistency.
  7. Simmer & adjust seasoning: Simmer on low for 4–6 minutes so flavors meld. Taste and add salt as required. Adjust chilli or add a pinch of sugar if you want to balance acidity.
  8. Finish & garnish: Turn off the heat. Sprinkle chopped coriander leaves over the curry and drizzle a little oil or melted ghee (optional) for richness.
  9. Serve: Serve hot with rotis, paratha, or steamed rice.

Yes, you can change the amount of oil used in the recipe but you will have to manage it from the next or previous meal of the same day. The total amount of oil/fat prescribed for a day must not be increased or decreased i.e. you have to cook entire day food with a given amount of oil in a day. This is applicable to those who are following Dr. Pankaj Kumar's diet plan.
